Dr Matt’s Newsletter March 4th: "All Local"
Supporting healthy social interactions and diversity of health choices
Sometimes thinking “globally” takes us a bit too far from home, so today I have gone “all local”. Local musicians and music teachers, a local community 10-mile/5K run my patients are joining for on April 23rd (yes you can still sign up: the more the merrier!), pictures of “Bald Eagles in the suburbs”, and a House Subcommittee hearing on the Coronavirus.
Because I live in the suburbs of the nation’s capital, the recent congressional subcommittee roundtable on the covid-19 countermeasures counts as “local” even though it could be seen as national news. It occurred this past Tuesday, February 28th, and was quite a barnburner. One of the experts that the committee invited to speak, professor of epidemiology from Harvard University Martin Kulldorff, called the misguided public health measures during covid-19 among the “worst public health mistakes in history”. Take a deep breath if you are in for a “deep dive”, because the entire two hour testimony is linked at the very end and it is quite a ride of emotions, at least for yours truly :-).
Today’s newsletter sections include:
Music of the week: Introducing Zenzi Miller, master piano and voice teacher, and Re-introducing musicians Andrea and Adam Melia – ready for a performance in your neighborhood.
Bald Eagles in the Suburbs - There are six bald eagle nests along the GW parkway where the “Parkway Classic” 10 mile and 5K runs will occur on April 23rd. Please email me if you plan to join us for the run and see the November 30 Newsletter for more details. We have a group doing the 10 mile run and at least two families with toddlers doing the 5K with “jogger strollers”.
Researchers of the week – Epidemiologists from Stanford, Harvard and Johns Hopkins testify in a congressional subcommittee about the “worst public health mistakes in history”.
Yours truly, one moment at a time.
Matt Irwin
Before offering the music of the week, here are two bald eagle photos above my home in the suburbs of Alexandria, Virginia, and a photo from the Parkway Classic website. You can barely make out the bald eagle in one pic; I included it for skeptics because you can see the top of our house :-). More wildlife photos are included later in the newsletter, after the music section, including a castor canadensis doing a beaver dam inspection in the creek behind our home.
Music of the week introducing Zenzi Miller, master piano teacher, and re-introducing musicians Andrea and Adam Melia – ready for a performance in your neighborhood.
In my newsletter on October 26th I introduced you to professional musicians Adam and Andrea Melia who give live performances at events in DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Today I re-introduce them along with another of my favorite musicians, Zenzi Miller, a full-time piano and voice teacher.
Zenzi Miller and Miller Muzic Enterprises:
The link below is to Zenzi’s Music Studio Website. She was forced to “go virtual” during the covid social isolation response, but she also loves to give mask-free in-person lessons to people within a reasonable distance of her home. Her website has a very fun video of a super-cute 4 year old boy who grows up year by year, with his piano improving steadily as the years pass. Call or email her for more information.

Re-introducing musicians Andrea and Adam Melia – ready for a performance in your neighborhood
Below are four selections from professional musicians Adam and Andrea Melia. I am the lucky doctor for their kids, and I first introduced you to them in my newsletter on October 26th. Adam and Andrea provide live music as featured artists, story tellers, and also as “ambient” music for weddings, birthday parties, special celebrations, and other social get-togethers.
I am providing both music-only mp3 recordings, which play more easily, and youtube links so you can also see them in action.
